Managed Profile is an administrative tool that provides a superior user profile solution than that currently provided by either mandatory or roaming profiles.
Apart from simplifying the management of user profiles in both Citrix and desktop environments Managed Profile also provides greater profile stability and control.
Until now administrators have had only two choices with respect to implementing user profiles: mandatory profiles and roaming profiles.
Mandatory profiles have the advantage that they are read only and therefore less susceptible to corruption while at the same time they can be centrally administered. However, they are not suited to environments where users require different profile structures or where users need to be able to customize certain aspects of their profiles.
Roaming profiles, on the other hand, do provide the flexibility required for users to be able to customize their own settings but roaming profiles are prone to corruption, they can grow to unmanageable sizes and in the case of certain environments they are still susceptible to losing settings. In particular, in Citrix environments roaming profile settings can be lost when users access applications deployed on different physical servers. Each new application potentially results in another copy of the user profile being loaded which means that only changes made during the last session to exit will be retained.
Managed Profile has been designed to couple the stability of mandatory profiles with the flexibility of roaming profiles and includes functionality to intelligently save and restore settings even in situations where users may have multiple instances of their profile loaded. It also includes functionality for managing printers, desktop shortcuts, drive mappings, starting of processes during logon and logoff and the creation of explorer namespace folders. In short, Managed Profile offers stability, flexibility and control – the key essentials for effective and trouble-free management of user profiles.
